Eligibility/Qualification
General Admission Requirements
- Awarded a second-cycle qualification.
- Completed courses of at least 240 credits, with at least 60 credits obtained in the second cycle.
- Alternatively, equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad.
Specific Admission Requirements
- At least 30 credits in bioscience, with at least 15 credits at the second-cycle level and a specialised project of at least 15 second-cycle credits in bioscience, OR
- An MSc in Engineering, another Master’s degree, or a comparable degree including applied bioscience.
Additional Requirements
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
Assessment Criteria
- Academic results from the first and second cycles.
- Relevant knowledge and skills for the thesis project and applied microbiology.
- Ability to work independently and solve research problems.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Any other relevant experience, such as professional or practical experience with R, Python, Matlab, bioinformatics, metabolic modelling, or metabolic engineering.
- Good collaborative skills, drive, and independence.
Job Description
- Conduct research work focused on yeast genome-scale metabolic modelling (GEM) for designing and optimizing the production of natural products.
- Develop a computational method to enhance the annotation of metabolic functions from genomics data and use it to screen for microbial genomes with biosynthetic pathways for target products.
- Develop a new yeast GEM based on previous models to design and test the effects of gene edits, knockouts, over-expression, or the introduction of heterologous genes.
- Collaborate with researchers within and outside the department at Lund University and other universities and research institutes.
- Participate in teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20% of the time).
Terms of Employment
- Full-time studies for four years.
- Fixed-term employment of up to five years (including 20% departmental duties).
