Postdoctoral Associate – Cytogenetics: The Entomology Department at Virginia Tech is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Associate to contribute to the cytogenetic and genomic study of the arboviral vector Aedes aegypti. This position involves innovative research aimed at developing next-generation-quality physical genome maps for disease vectors, with a focus on chromosomal rearrangements and their adaptive significance.

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Ph.D. in Genetics, Cell Biology, Entomology, or a related field received in the last five years, with at least one year of eligibility remaining.
  • Required experience in molecular biology, including proficiency in modern technologies such as Hi-C proximity ligation, advanced cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and bioinformatics.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will:

  • Characterize chromosomal rearrangements in the Aedes aegypti genome and explore their distribution across global tropics.
  • Investigate the role of these rearrangements in the mosquitoes’ adaptation to various climatic factors.
  • Examine the molecular basis of genetic divergence associated with inversion-related phenotypes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Laboratory experience in molecular biology and genetics.
  • Strong web computer skills, with the ability to learn new techniques and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
