Scholarship & Project Description

The Project

The bacterial Type 6 secretion system (T6SS) is a dynamic nanomachine sharing evolutionary origins with contractile phage tails, enabling bacteria to deliver folded effector proteins across membranes into target cells. While recent work has revealed dynamic spatial positioning, tit-for-tat responses, and host-cell interactions, fundamental mechanistic understanding remains incomplete regarding:

  • How precise timing and subcellular spatial localization of T6SS assembly are achieved.
  • The specific triggers and signaling cascades activating T6SS firing.

What is Offered

  • Funding: A fully funded PhD appointment within an international and multidisciplinary research group.
  • Training & Development: Structured PhD program offering extensive networking, transferable skills training, and scientific exchange.
  • Research Infrastructure: Direct access to state-of-the-art Biozentrum Core Facilities (Imaging, Biophysics, Electron Microscopy).
  • Living Environment: High quality of life in Basel, located at the border of Switzerland, France, and Germany.
