About- At the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), we shape the future. We do this by using science to solve real issues. Our research makes a difference to people, industry and the planet.

Research/Job area– Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or Control Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Computer Science or relevant discipline area

Location- The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia

Eligibility/Qualification-

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical or Control Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Computer Science. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • High level of expertise in applied mathematics, such as linear algebra, optimisation, control and planning theory.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in scientific programming using C++.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of perception algorithms and their interaction with planning and control in robotics
  • Show strong experience in working with planning and control algorithms for mobile field robotics in outdoor environments.
  • Show experience with systems integration, having worked “hands-on” with mobile robotic platforms beyond simulation environments.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, plus the motivation and discipline to carry out autonomous research.
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, plus the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.

Job/Position Description- Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years or part time equivalent and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

The role of the Postdoctoral Fellow in CSIRO is to conduct innovative research leading to scientific achievements that are aligned with CSIRO’s strategies. You may be engaged in scientific activity ranging from fundamental research to the investigation of specific industry or community problems.

You will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, assist in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts.

The Robotics and Autonomous Systems Group at CSIRO develops systems for perceiving the environment, for use in mapping, navigation and interpretation. We are looking for a researcher to help build on the existing expertise and develop new algorithms for new devices in order to enhance the perceptive ability of autonomous systems.

In particular, you will have expertise in planning and control algorithms for field robotics, using data from laser range-finders (lidar) or camera devices. The types of robots range from wheeled to legged platforms. You should be comfortable working with real platforms outdoors and obtaining results beyond simulation. You should also be familiar with concepts of system integration, combining hardware and software for robust solutions outdoors. This is an exciting opportunity which requires a high level of competence in mathematics, particularly 3D geometry, linear algebra, optimisers and mechanics. Additionally, you will require competence in C++ software engineering and Python is desired.
