Job/Position Description-
In the framework of the Programme POR FSE 2014-2020 “JRC Mobility Voucher” of Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia(“FVG”), a 12-month fellowship is available for the project “Development of methods to detect mosquitoes carrying viruses”, P. Ref. FVG/19/033, CUP F84I19001910006. The project is a close collaboration between the Laboratory of Molecular Virology (Dr. Alessandro
Marcello) of the ICGEB Trieste and the Unit D.02 Water and Marine Resources TP 121 (Dr. Teresa Lettieri) of the DG Joint Research Centre Directorate D-Sustainable resources located in Ispra (VA).
Tentative starting date: 1st May 2021.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated with a strong interest in molecular virology and excellent technical and organization skills. The work, mainly performed in Ispra, will however require a minimum level of mobility between the two institutions according to the priorities of the project. Under the guidance and the supervision of the leaders of the project at both institutions, the candidate will work and fine tune molecular methods to identify in the insects the viruses that are pathogen for humans; in particular the candidate will be requested to:
- Setup a real-time polymerase chain reaction protocol for the differential identification of Arboviruses including: West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, Usutu virus, Zika virus, Dengue virus, Yellow fever virus.
- Apply the protocol to the identification of the viral RNA in various stages of mosquito development (larva, adult).
- Develop a strategy to apply the technique to monitor water reservoirs for potential risk of infection
The gross available amount is for 30,568.32 Euro, including stipend, health insurance coverage with Cigna International and Visa costs if required, plus a travel voucher of 180 Euro to reach ISPRA JRC Centre. During the 12-month mobility period, the candidate will have a fellowship contract with ICGEB Trieste and will work at the JRC Ispra as Unpaid Visiting Scientist. Bi-monthly reports signed by the fellow and the JRC supervisor are required.
How to Apply-
Interested candidates are invited to send their CV and references (motivation letter, brief project proposal of 2 pages max, English knowledge certificate and any other relevant title) to the Fellowships Unit (email: fellowships@icgeb.org) with email subject JRC MOBILITY VOUCHER not later than 31/12/2020.
A joint ICGEB-JRC committee will evaluate received candidatures and shortlist a maximum of three candidates to be invited for an interview. The name of the selected fellow will be then published on ICGEB website.
