The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation’s primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. A postdoctoral position is available in NREL’s Chemistry and Nanoscience Center to pursue research in the area of coating and process science related to fuel cells and electrolyzers. This position will primarily focus on investigating the formulation of inks and design of coating processes to control catalyst layer structure and properties, primarily for polymer electrolyte fuel cells and low-temperature water electrolyzers.

Project Title- Coating Process Science – Fuel Cell & Electrolysis
- Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science & engineering, mechanical or electrical engineering or related field.
- Record of publications/presentations in areas relevant to NREL projects.
Candidates with coating and process science experience in similar materials fields, for example battery or photovoltaic materials, will be considered. However, knowledge of or experience with polymer electrolyte fuel cell and electrolysis materials is strongly desired.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Must be a recent PhD graduate within the last three years.
Job/Position Description-The candidate will be responsible for fabrication and characterization of inks, electrodes, and MEAs. This will include ex situ characterization of inks and fabricated materials to understand the impact of formulation and process parameters, and the subsequent performance and interpretation of in situ fuel cell testing. An excellent candidate would also have an understand of solution science and coating processes. Experience with fabrication and testing of electrochemical devices (e.g. fuel cells, electrolysis cells, batteries) is strongly desired. Experience with electrochemical processes and diagnostics relevant to polymer electrolyte fuel cells and electrolyzers as well as characterization techniques such as electron microscopy and rheology would be a plus. Additional areas of interest include, but are not limited to: 1) colloid, polymer, and solution science 2) spray, slot, and gravure coating. In general, candidates should have a demonstrated track record of success in addressing fundamental and applied science questions and devising solutions to challenging problems.
