The research focuses on developing oil-free, high-speed turbomachines for industrial decarbonisation, including centrifugal compressors, radial inflow turbines, mechanical vapour recompression systems, high-temperature heat pumps, and waste-heat power systems.

The position will be based on the IIT Madras campus, Chennai.

Eligibility / Qualification

Essential Qualification:

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field, with a thesis in turbomachinery, rotordynamics, or a related area.
• Candidates who have submitted their PhD thesis may also apply.
• Exceptional MS/MTech graduates with at least 3 years of turbomachinery design experience in industry or a national laboratory may be considered at the Senior Project Engineer level.
• Demonstrated expertise in at least one of:
  • Turbomachinery aerodynamic design and CFD
  • Rotordynamics and bearings for high-speed rotors
  • Experimental turbomachinery and rig design
• Working proficiency in Python or an equivalent programming language.
• Experience with at least one CFD or finite-element package.
• Evidence of completed practical/research work, such as a built rig, tested machine, usable computational code, or experimental research publications.

Desirable Experience:

• Real-gas/non-ideal working fluids such as steam, refrigerants, organic fluids, or supercritical CO₂.
• Small high-speed machines such as turbochargers, micro gas turbines, turboexpanders, high-speed blowers, or fuel-cell compressors.
• Balancing, vibration measurement, high-speed data acquisition, or spin testing.
• Open-source tools including OpenFOAM, SU2, CalculiX, ROSS, Multall, or T-Blade3.
• Manufacturing experience involving 5-axis machining, metal additive manufacturing, or geometric tolerancing.

Job Description

The selected candidate will take technical ownership of the design and development of a complete high-speed turbomachinery system, from the initial duty point through design, manufacturing, commissioning, and experimental testing. The researcher will also act as a technical lead for a small team of project engineers and research students.

Key responsibilities include:

• Mean-line and through-flow design of centrifugal compressor and radial turbine stages using real-gas properties.
• Off-design performance and map development.
• 3D blade, diffuser, and volute design.
• CFD analysis using real-gas models and validation against public test cases.
• Rotor layout, rotordynamics, critical-speed analysis, bearing selection, thrust balancing, and seal design.
• Structural and thermal analysis of wheels, shafts, retaining sleeves, and casings.
• Overspeed and burst-margin assessment.
• Preparation of manufacturing drawings and coordination with vendors.
• Support for 5-axis machining, casing manufacturing, balancing, and overspeed testing.
• Design and operation of steam and refrigerant test loops.
• Instrumentation, uncertainty analysis, commissioning, and performance mapping.
• Preparation of research publications and technical/design reports.
• Supporting funding proposals and mentoring MS and PhD students.
