Aalborg University, Denmark offers Marie Skłodowska Curie PhD stipend in Biomechanics Research Group, Department of Materials and Production, the Faculty of Engineering and Science. Eligible candidate can apply online.

About- A Marie Skłodowska Curie PhD stipend is available at the Biomechanics Research Group, Department of Materials and Production, the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 September 2018 or soon hereafter. The Biomechanics Research Group studies the field on many different levels from cells to whole humans. The group’s expertise is on the border between mechanical and biomedical engineering, and we are particularly well founded in simulation methods, such as musculoskeletal simulation based on multbody dynamics. The group is the origin of the well-known musculoskeletal simulation system, the AnyBody Modeling System. Better simulation methods, improved models and new applications of musculoskeletal simulation remains the principal activity of the group.

Research/Job area– Biomechanics

Project Title- The Spinal Muscle Simulator

Location- Aalborg University, Denmark

Eligibility/Qualification- The ideal candidate has an excellent background in advanced computational mechanics and mathematics. Experience with musculoskeletal simulation is an advantage, especially if the experience is with the AnyBody Modeling System. Knowledge and experience with anatomy and physiology is a further advantage.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master’s degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of three years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Engineering and Science, Aalborg University, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Job/Position Description- The candidate will be working as part of the Rapid Biomechanics Simulation for Personalized Clinical Design (RAINBOW) MSCA European Training Network, awarded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. This network consists of five universities, one hospital and eight industrial partners, and it will educate a total of 15 PhD students through common dedicated training activities.

The title of the work is “The Spinal Muscle Simulator”. The task is to develop a musculoskeletal model to predict loads on spinal muscles (and other structures) during activities of daily living for patients with juvenile scoliosis. A more complete description on the project’s homepage can be found here: http://rainbow.ku.dk/projects/esr5/.

Since the scholarship is part of the MSCA European Training Network programme, the candidate must – at the date of recruitment – be an “early stage researcher” (i.e. in the first 4 years of his/her research career and cannot have a doctoral degree) and cannot have resided in Denmark for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the recruitment. The RAINBOW network offers many travelling opportunities for training events and an obligation to undertake extended visits or research stays at the cooperating institutions.

How to Apply- Eligible and interested candidate can apply online.

For Contact- You may obtain further information from the principal supervisor, Professor John Rasmussen, Department of Materials and Production, e-mail: jr@mp.aau.dk, direct phone: +45 9940 9307. Chief Surgeon Christian Wong from Hvidovre Hospital will be co-supervising the project.
