Eligibility/Qualification

  • At least a 2:1 Honours degree, or international equivalent, in social science disciplines (e.g., Anthropology, Geography, Politics, Sociology)
  • Preferably hold or be working towards a Masters degree at Merit level, or international equivalent
  • Meet English language proficiency requirements if English is not the first language
  • Open only to applicants with a Home fee status
  • Must start study in September 2024

Job Description

PhD proposals should address social science issues related to agriculture and the countryside, aligned with the core research interests of the supervisors. Research themes include:

  • Health and well-being of rural and farming communities
  • Future of County Farms
  • Impact of Brexit and agricultural transition on UK farming
  • Adoption of regenerative farming practices
  • Health and safety in UK farming

Potential research questions include:

  • Addressing mental health challenges among younger farmers
  • Vision and future for County Farms
  • Impact of Brexit on UK farming reorientation
  • Benefits of regenerative farming practices
  • Improving the health and safety record in UK farming

Fieldwork may involve extensive travel to rural and remote farm locations.
