Project Summary:

  • Diabetes mellitus impairs the health and healing capacity of the dental pulp through oxidative stress, compromised microcirculation, and accumulation of advanced glycation end-products, resulting in persistent inflammation and poor tissue repair. Although vital pulp therapy (pulpotomy) is increasingly preferred for managing pulpitis, little is known about its outcomes in diabetic patients. Current tricalcium silicate cements promote calcific repair rather than regeneration of functional pulp tissue.
  • This project aims to develop a bioactive scaffold for pulp regeneration in the diabetic condition. Building on the group’s earlier work, in which Resolvin E1 (RvE1) delivered through a carboxymethyl chitosan scaffold improved proliferation and biomineralization of inflamed human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs), the project will combine RvE1 with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to address both unresolved inflammation and impaired angiogenesis.
  • The work involves biopolymer scaffold fabrication and characterization, controlled release studies of bioactive molecules, and in vitro evaluation using hDPSCs under hyperglycaemic and inflammatory conditions.
