In order to further develop the High Energy Particle Physics research at UCT, research group hereby invite suitably qualified candidates to apply for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship on the ATLAS experiment. The successful candidates will conduct research with Dr. Sahal Yacoob.

Eligibility/Qualification–
• Fellowships are only available to individuals who have achieved a doctoral degree within the past five years;
• Applicants may not previously have held full-time permanent professional or academic posts;
• As part of the professional development of the successful candidate, he or she may be required to participate in departmental activities (such as limited teaching, outreach, and co- supervision duties incidental hereto).
• The applicant will be expected to spend some time at CERN (up to a maximum which is less than 50% is envisioned), and be based at UCT otherwise.
• There is additional funding available for time spent at CERN
Academic Criteria
• Applicants should have graduated with a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics;
• Preference will be given to applicants with experience on an LHC experiment (CMS / ATLAS / LHCb) in Particle Physics as opposed to Heavy Ion Physics
• Experience supervising students will be an advantage
Job/Position Description- The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be expected to contribute to the operational, and upgrade responsibilities of the UCT-ATLAS group (currently spread between the Muon and tracking system upgrades), as well as contribute to the training of students with active involvement in their research projects. The current focus of the group is Standard Model Electroweak Measurements.
• The value of each fellowship is R350 000.00 which is exempt from taxation.
• The tenure of each fellowship is 1 year (1 March 2019 – 28 February 2020), after which a second year is possible based on satisfactory academic progress and the availability of funds.
Further extensions must be applied for each year until the final and fifth year, provided progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
