Research/Job Area- Biology or in the relevant field

Project Title- Postdoctoral position in the field of bio-inspired photoelectrochemical reduction of CO2. (Photo-induced activation of carbon dioxide)

Location- Laboratory of Molecular Research for Solar Energy Innovations, Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw, Poland

Eligibility/Qualification–
– applicants must have a PhD degree in biology or in the relevant field
– distinctive scientific achievements
– preference will be given to candidates who have experience in bio-approaches to photo-catalysis/electrochemistry
– ability to work in a team, and to communicate effectively with team members, will also be an advantage

Job/Position Description- The project aims at investigating several key aspects of electro-reduction of carbon dioxide and the means to enhance its kinetics and, more specifically, to counteract the deactivation processes known to occur over these reactions. The continuing interest in catalytic activation of CO2 stems primarily from the willto mimic the natural photosynthetic reduction process operating, despite its complexity, in a facile way. However, what readily takes place in nature, is more difficult to adapt to a large scale production of solar fuels. Earlier comparison of CO2 electro-reduction activity involving a large number of metallic cathodes showed the highest extent of conversion to occur at so-called “medium hydrogen overvoltage” metals, like copper. Apparently, the Cu surface provides the required trade-off between (moderate) coverage with H atoms and stabilization of CO2 reduction intermediates. However, the CO2 reduction at a Cu electrode requires high overvoltages to occur and, in addition, it suffers progressive poisoning that also triggers the cathodic process to H2 evolution. It is to be noted in this connection that in all cases H2 is formed in parallel with the CO2 reduction products and the right choice of the electrocatalyst should make it a minor cathodic reaction.
