Job/Position Description-Â
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a post-doctoral scientist to join a group working on genetic vector control in the Department of Vector Biology. The role will develop novel approaches that investigate the possibility of synergizing two forms of vector control: insecticides and gene drive.
The main focus of your role will investigate regions of reduced diversity in the genome, arising as a result of selective sweeps or strong functional constraint, as targets for gene drive and also investigate the possibility of using CRISPR-based elements to understand the evolution of insecticide resistance. You will also be encouraged to develop new projects in related areas of interest, as time allows.
Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Develop and expand genome editing approaches in mosquitoes.
- Use CRISPR technologies to edit mosquito genomes
- Build basic gene drives – self-copying elements that increase their frequency in the genome
- Develop and expand systems for selecting insecticide resistance in vivo.
- Establish a screening protocol and selection regime for the emergence of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes
- Design caged population experiments to simulate the invasion of a gene drive element into a mosquito population.
- Develop novel projects
- Generate ideas and data to support new project applications
- Apply for research grants/ fellowships in collaboration with PIsÂ
- Provide support and supervision to Ph.D. students and technical staff within the group.
- Create training material for, and provide training in molecular and analytical techniques to others in the lab
- Support Ph.D. students working on similar topics in the analysis of their data  Â
